PostSubject: Low Tunings   Fri Aug 01, 2008 11:21 am

Whilst dropped D may be a pretty standard tuning now, do any of you guys like to tune down just that little bit lower? For writing songs I love to use dropped B although was somewhat worried by finding a series of Dir En Grey tabs in dropped A o_O That strings must have been falling off the guitar!! XD

So, what tunings do you guys like to use?

I usually use drop D alot.

But for some I use drop C. (Bullet For My Valentine Stuff)

BTW, Drop A sounds REALLY bad lol. you can almost pick your string up and take it out xD

Ehh...

I use E standard/Half step down only. I like the ton from it, and you don't need to drop your tuning to be 'heavier', and sadly a lot of bands today seem to think just that...

It might be because I have a Floyd Rose, but generally when you adjust your tuning you adjust the tension. So it's not like your strings are about to fall off. The lowest I've ever went was C Standard, and I didn't like that because I could hit the high notes I like to when I solo. Ick.

I know In Flames uses some Drop A#, and it actually doesn't sound too bad.

I'm actually a bit saddened by what happened recently. I saw a guy playing guitar, and walked up to him. He looked like he was in his teens/early 20s, and when he got done (I noticed he was in Drop C) I asked him why he tuned like that.

He said it was the heaviest tuning there is and all good metal uses it. He also said it's easier to play chords that way.

I wanted to break his guitar in half.

I don't blame you for wanting to slap that guy XD I think the reasons I go for dropped B in a lot of my deathgrind/grindcore is simply that it makes the distortion extremely strong, which is a sound I really like. On the other hand, a simple dropped D is often more than enough if I just want to play songs by other bands. If I really feel the need to tune any lower, it's usually for something very specific.

Not because it makes it easier to play chords XD

I'm not sure about all this low-tunign stuff, maybe seeing as my guitar is out of tune most of the time Very Happy or because I despise my tuner. But I do like the half-step down tuning, D tuning and drop D.

Eh.

What I meant by 'easier chords' is that in something like E standard you have say, an open low e, and then the Fifth above it, so you play 0-2.

In drop d, the chords are 'easier' (not the same though) because it's the same fret on both strings.

People who use that excuse can't play the root and the fifth fast enough and want an easy way out.

Yeah, I know what you mean ^^ It's a bit on the silly side, although admittedly, it does help with getting up to speed. It is lazy playing though.

My fav tuning to use is Open G. It's a REALLY heavy sound. It can also sound nice depending on the type of pedals or the lack of said pedals.

^ Well, I'll have to try that one! I've never used one of the open tunings before, but now's the time, I suppose! ^^

Eh. The only open tuning I use is Open Dm. I just don't use it that often, generally I only use E Standard/Flat.
