Eurovision. It's the television phenomenon that graces our screens every year, providing us with a laugh at Europe's "Best" talents in any fields of music. We've seen ABBA, Cliff Richard, Bucks Fizz and countless other quirky acts from countries throughout Europe.

In recent years, though, there's been a break to the mould. Rock and metal bands have been infiltrating the usual array of pop and traditional folk music groups, attracting a slightly different audience to usual. In 2006, Finland played wildcard "Lordi" and won, despite the act being mask/costume wearing metallers, who shocked members of the Greek team, provoking accusations of Satanism. Yet, Lordi triumphed as the winners. Since them, Finland again submitted a metal band, and other countries also entered with rock groups.

Is it a sign of change? Well, American/Armenian rock-legends, System of a Down, seem ready to go for it. It would appear that the group is considering submitting themselves as the Armenian entry. Only, it's not just to win the contest.

SOAD have been known, in the past, for their active work in raising awareness of the Turkish Massacre of Armenians in the aftermath of World War One. They assisted the production of and provided their music for the 2006 film "Screamers", a documentary abut the genocide, and vocalist, Serj Tankian, helped to form the Social Justice group "Axis of Justice", which has helped to raise the profile of issues such as this one.

On the issue of Eurovision, Tankian has been quoted as saying:

"ESC [Eurovision Song Contest] would be an excellent way to make this theme known".

And there's little doubt about it - the song contest had an estimated number of viewers lying somewhere between 100 million and 600 million. Amongst all of those listeners, some are bound to take in the mission and the band would have acheived their goal.

However, with the band still on hiatus, would this be the time of their reformation? Would there be a follow up of an album or a long awaited tour?

Well, we'll all be waiting! And one thing's for sure - if they make it onto our beloved Eurovision, no-one will be able to forget it! This'll be a performance to savour! Who knows - they may even win!
